Ex-junior international and proprietor of Eagles Wings FC of Benin, Darlington Ogbeifun, has called on the Edo State FA to make the FA Cup more attractive to participating teams in the state.
Ogbeifun also lamented favouritism of some teams in the state, saying it would kill the morale of young teams that saw the competition as a way to gain national prominence.
He said if the issue was not resolved, most teams in the state would focus on the youth league rather than wasting their resources in a competition that gave undue advantage to certain teams.
He said, “The FA Cup competition in Edo State as currently being played does not encourage smaller teams to give their best as the winners of the event seem to be predetermined. Upsets are what makes the competition very attractive and if you take that element away from the tournament, if becomes very unattractive.
“The last time I enjoyed the FA Cup in the state was during the tenure of Frank Ilaboya. He made sure the competition had sponsors and teams went home with prize money. But it seems all that is gone now. Hopefully, things will get better as we move on,” he added.
According to Ogbeifun, it is disheartening to groom players and assemble a team only to be undone by “administrative rascality.”
