The law in Imo on Monday confirmed the decease of an escapee of Imo Correctional Centre Owerri and a fellow member of the proscribed IPOB/ESN grouping in the province.
The law spokesperson, CSP Michael Abattam, confirmed the incident to journalists in Owerri, Imo Province.
Mr. Abattam said that the incident occurred on Monday at in relation to 0745hrs, piece residents of Umuagbavo Oru Ahiara in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA of Imo Province, came out of their houses for their daily business activities.
According to law, “One Obinwanne Iwu, 34, a native Ahiara in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA of Imo Province, came to the market place with members of his gang attacking, looting opened shops and forcing people to lock upwards their shops and preventing them from doing their legal businesses.”
“Many shops were opened and people were going in relation to their lawful businesses before the grouping started shouting at the top of their voices “nowadays is Monday and every body must obey the sit-at-home enjoin.”
“This did not go downward good with the people who resisted it in its entirety.”
He said, “Pandemonium that ensured, angry mob in their numbers held the leader of the gang, one Obinwanne Iwu, tied his hands behind, piece others fled the scene into hiding. In the physical process, he was mercilessly beaten to decease, before the law patrol squad arrived the scene.”
The law said efforts made by the law patrol squad to arrest the perpetrators proved abortive as they all fled the scene on sighting the patrol squad.
The PPRO farther said, “The Commissioner of Police force, Imo Province Command, CP Rabiu Hussaini, piece condemning the barbaric deed, advised members of the public to manus over suspects to the Police force for proper investigation and prosecution. Instead of taking the laws into their hands.”
He said an investigating squad from the Province Criminal Intelligence Investigation Department (SCIID) of the command has been set upwards to commence investigation into the mob activeness.
