NEWS UPDATE: Prepare to act, Akwa Ibom govt tasks Boundary Commission

The Akwa Ibom State Government has charged the National Boundary Commission to be firm in sanctioning any community that refuses to adhere to its directives, especially in the area of completing the field-tracing exercise and other demarcation activities.

It added that the commission should not only bark like a toothless bulldog but be prepared to bite if it becomes necessary.

The Deputy Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo, gave the charge on Friday during a sensitisation tour on transborder activities by the officials of NBC officials to Ini and Ika Local Government Areas of the state.

Mr Ekpo lamented that boundary demarcation activities have been sabotaged and abandoned saying that such has a tendency of sparking another round of agitations, crises and indiscriminate killings at such border flashpoints.

The Deputy Governor, represented by Mr. Nkopuruk Ekaiko, the Permanent Secretary in his office noted that giving penalties and sanctions to defaulters are the only ways to tackle sabotage of government resolutions and directives on border activities.

He said, “NBC should be prepared to bark and bite if it becomes necessary and not only to bark like a toothless bulldog.”

He, however, reiterated the need for the completion of demarcation exercises in the border communities before embarking on any Transborder Co-operation activities by NBC.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, Surveyor Adamu Adaji explained that NBC’s initiative in promoting transborder cooperation was to bring lasting peace and love among border communities through the provision of shared amenities along the borders.

Adaji who was represented by the Assistant Director, Mrs Yahanasu Aliyu, however, revealed that Akwa Ibom/Abia borders have been designated as a priority boundary.
