NEWS UPDATE: Oil contract: Ilorin alfa jailed for defrauding South Korean using Buhari aide’s name

Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara Province High Judicature, Ilorin, on Thur, imposed 28 years imprisonment on Ilorin-based Alfa Jamiu Isiaka for an oil contract scam.

The cleric was arraigned for fraud and obtaining by mistaken pretence.

The offences were opposite to Subdivision 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Deed, 2006.

The jurist held that the prosecution tendered plenty evidence to prove that Jamiu was guilty of the allegations.

The Economical and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on June 14, 2019 arraigned the convict on 4 counts. He pleaded “not guilty”.

Jamiu presented himself as President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, and ex-Grouping Managing Managing director of the Nigerian National Crude Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru.

He used the simulated identities to defraud a S Korean National, Keun Sig Kim to the tune of N30million.

Jamiu deceived the foreign national under the pretext of securing NNPC approbation/marketing cast and license certificate to purchase rough oil in Nigeria.

During interrogation, Jamiu claimed that he used the money to conduct sacrifice for the petitioner.

He explained that section of the money was used to purchase vulture, elephant skin, elephant intestine, the skull of a king of beasts and liver of gorilla used as ingredients for sacrifice.

EFCC counsel, O. B Akinsola called 2 witnesses, including Detective Dare Folarin who narrated how the accused was arrested and how several fraudulent funds were traced to his bank accounts.

The prosecution tendered evidence on how Jamiu obtained $88,521 from Kim for the “NNPC approbation”.

The EFCC also gave an account of how the convict impersonated Baru, Adesina, an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Commissioner, Amina Zakari

The accused did not controvert the charge or the evidence tendered by the EFCC.

Justice Abdulgafar found Jamiu guilty of the 4 counts sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment on each count. The jail term will run concurrently.

The jurist ordered the forfeiture of some properties recovered from the convict, which are proceeds of his illegal activities.

They include a four-bedroom bungalow measuring 1813.132 located at Oke-Foma in Ilorin Due west LGA of Kwara Province, a Toyota Corolla Automobile, one television.

Others are home theatre, freezer, generator, washing machine and LG air conditioner, to the federal authorities.

The judicature also ordered restitution to the victim, Keun Sig Kim.
