NEWS UPDATE: Ogun pensioners protest over N68b unpaid gratuity, N3,000 monthly stipend

Local regime pensioners in Ogun Province have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to growth their monthly pension, saying some of them still have N3,000 as monthly pension.

The pensioners also demanded the payment of their 10 years outstanding tip, which they position at N68 billion.

Defying the forenoon showers on quarta-feira, the aged pensioners marched to the Governor’s business office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, but were denied entry.

The pensioners, under the aegis of Local Regime Pensioners Organization of Nigeria (LOGPAN), were armed with placards demanding their gratuities’

The placards read; “Gratuities are on sales to pensioners”,
“Governor Dapo Abiodun honour your begetter and care for Pensioners good”.
“Governor Abiodun, we don’t deserve this worst humiliation”, and others.

Speaking to newsmen, the Province Chairman of LOGPAN, Sikiru Ayilara lamented the alleged inhuman handling meted out to retirees by the Abiodun administration.

Ayilara accused Abiodun of failing to hold his promises to the pensioners, regretting that they still earn paltry sums as pensions.

“Some of us still earn a paltry amount of N3,000 as monthly pension.”

He described as a “wicked human action”, the quarterly payment of N500 million to clear the outstanding tip, saying it would take 34 years to clear.

The chairman stressed that the organization had written 13 letters to Gov Abiodun but alleged that the governor had remained recalcitrant and unyielding to their demands.

He said the payment of his members’ pension through the Ministry building of Finance “is illegal”, instead, he requested that the Bureau of Local Regime Pension be saddled with the responsibleness.

“We have written 13 letters to the Governor through various channels without response. We had informed all security apparatus in the province: DSS, Commissioner of Police force, Commandant of NSCDC, SSA on security matters to the Governor. They all intervened without whatsoever positive response from the Governor.

“We have informed all the 4 paramount rulers in the province with no resultant. We have held 6 meetings with the SSG, Primary of Staff, Top dog of Service, Commissioner for LG and Chieftaincy Affairs, amidst other notable regime officials.

“Governor Abiodun should honour us, grandfathers and grandmothers, by directing his personal attending to us for us to encounter and regain a lasting solution to the inhuman treatments existence meted to us at our old age, leading to premature expiry amidst us after serving the province for betwixt 10 and 35 years.

“We demand instant harmonisation of the pensions. Some of us still have N3,000 monthly as a pension. We demand regular payment of our pensions as it was.”

Reacting to the allegations and complaints by the pensioners, the Secretarial assistant to the Province Regime, Tokunbo Talabi appealed to the protesting pensioners to be to a greater extent patient with the regime.

He said, “the regime is currently experiencing tough times” as a resultant of the paucity of funds.

He, notwithstanding, assured that the province regime would appear into the demands of the aggrieved senior citizens.
