The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Command (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians to halt consuming and distributing infant formulas manufactured by Able Groupe.
The formulas were said to have inadequate iron levels and did not run across upward other requirements of the US Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA).
NAFDAC Managing director-Full general, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, disclosed that the agency received the information from the US-FDA.
A US-based company, Able Groupe’s recalled products are sold under the brand names HiPP, Holle, Bioland and Kendamil.
An embargo was placed on the formulas because the pre-market notifications had not been submitted to the FDA.
NAF advised Nigerians to avoid HiPP consolation milk formula, HiPP Dutch stage 1 combiotic Infant milk formula, HiPP HA Federal Republic of Germany hypoallergenic stage pre combiotic infant milk formula.
Others: Holle Bio Stage 1 biological infant milk formula, Holle Bio stage pre biological infant milk formula, Lebenswert Anfangsmilch stage 1 biological infant milk formula, and HiPP UK stage 1 Combiotic firstly infant milk formula.
They contain less than one milligram of iron per 100 calories which is inadequate for some infants, specially those born prematurely or with low childbirth weight.
The products were also not labelled as required by the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 (21 CFR 107.10 and 107.20).
