NEWS UPDATE: LaLiga: Messi clears air on wanting to play at Barcelona for free

Paris Saint-Germain forward, Lionel Messi, has hit out at Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, for saying he might have played for nothing at the club.

Messi has anyway recommended he would have been willing to acknowledge a greater compensation slice to remain at Camp Nou.

The 34-year-old acknowledged a compensation decrease of half to remain at Barca, yet the LaLiga club were as yet unfit to enroll him with the association body because of their spending limit for the season being sliced to €97 million.

Speaking after Messi had joined PSG as a free specialist, Laporta said he had trusted the Argentina forward would present to play for free.

“The truth is, as I clarified when I left, I did all that could be within reach to stay.

“Never at any second did they request that I play free of charge. They requested that I decrease my compensation by half and I did it with practically no issue. We were able to help the club more. My longing and that of my family was to remain in Barcelona.

“No one requested that I play for nothing, and yet the president’s words were unseemly. It hurt since I don’t think there was any need to say that.

“It resembles taking the ball from you and not tolerating the obligation or assuming responsibility for things. That makes individuals think and creates questions that I don’t think I merit,” Messi told SPORT in a meeting distributed on Monday.
