A Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Olawale Folarin, has charged personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ever display emotional intelligence whenever they relate with members of the public.
He advised that relating with members of the public entails showing empathy towards other people fifty-fifty in the face of provocation and that the power to command emotional behaviour is required.
Dr. Folarin made this known Tuesday as the invitee lecturer at a programme to enlighten personnel of the corps on their psychological assessment to ascertain their fitness, emotional readiness and mental alertness.
In the lecture titled ”The Location of Emotional Intelligence in Security Operations, Folarin famous that emotional intelligence consists of knowing one’s emotions and those of others.
He explained that some attributes of emotional intelligence include self and social awareness, self-regulation/direction, self-care – mental, physical, medical and spiritual, self-control, achievement, orientation and human relationship direction.
Highlighting to a greater extent on the topic, Folarin emphasised that emotionally intelligent personnel will adhere strictly to the rules of engagement, be alert when on duty and will not expose themselves to danger.
In his words, “He must be able to display the power to command his anger, avoid the usage of drugs and alcohol when on duty and also avoid financial embarrassment.
“Such personnel must know how to reply to situations rather than reacting to them.
Spell advising the NSCDC personnel to preserve a positive mental attitude and be approachable, he added that having the character of existence sociable shows emotional strength rather than weakness.
“Benefits of emotional intelligence also include but are not limited to superior teamwork, honor for some other gender, self-control and greater self-awareness.”
