The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Thursday, said Nigeria is strongly committed to preventing mass atrocities such as the Rwandan Genocide of 1994 anywhere within and around its borders.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President said this after visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda.

Buhari also appealed to Nigerians to be tolerant of one another and embrace peace.

The statement was titled ‘Nigerians need to be tolerant of one another, President Buhari says after laying wreath at Kigali genocide memorial.’

After touring the permanent exhibitions at the memorial, Buhari was said to have laid a wreath at the mass graves where more than 250,000 victims of the genocide were buried.

He also paid tribute to the memory of the victims and prayed for healing for the survivors.

Before departing, he wrote in the visitors’ book, saying, ‘‘remembering the victims of this dark history of the Rwanda Genocide, we pray that humanity will never experience this kind of hatred, wickedness and violence to others because of their ethnic background, religion and beliefs.
